Mission & Vision
The mission of the Sarah Parker Remond School is to meet the needs of all members of the school community by collaborating to create equitable and meaningful learning experiences that motivate, engage, and connect to all learners.
The vision is to build educational experiences where children uncover their potential to be compassionate and engaged citizens of our school and the greater community regardless of socioeconomic status, race, native language, or other elements of privilege or challenge.
Through the collective engagement and commitment of our students, staff, and families to creating a truly inclusive experience for all students we will ensure all students achieve at the same high level.
Who is Sarah Parker Remond?
Born in Salem, Mass., Sarah Parker Remond (1826–1894) was a pioneering African-American abolitionist, suffragist, physician and lecturer for the American Anti-Slavery Society. She traveled extensively across the U.S. and Europe advocating for human rights, racial equality, and a Union victory during the Civil War.
Born into a prominent family in Salem, Ms. Remond spent her life campaigning against segregation and racial prejudice. Notably in the 1850s, she successfully took legal action after she was forcibly ejected from a Boston theater for refusing to sit in a segregated section.
In 1858, she traveled to Great Britain to lecture against American slavery and to rally European support for the Union. She eventually moved to London, where she studied nursing and became one of the only black women to sign the first mass Votes for Women petition presented to Parliament in 1866.
She relocated to Italy to pursue her long-held dream of a formal education and graduated as a physician and obstetrician from the Santa Maria Nuova Hospital medical school in Florence and successfully practiced medicine there until her death.
